we used to have to take kleenex and our own school supplies. For some reason, I really doubt your daughter is going to use 15 glue sticks by herself. or 4 packs of markers or 3 packs of crayons. I would send ONE for her to use herself and be done with it. Talk to the teacher, that's ridiculous! Is she supposed to share or something? We always had our own box and used our own stuff. That way, if we had it, we had it, but if not, we had to borrow or do without. That should be good enough.

Can you even find 35MM film anymore?

Oh, and my colleague at work was scrounging for a 3 1/2 floppy disk. Ahem. We don't use those anymore either. In fact, I haven't seen a computer anywhere with one (except my old one but that's from 1997). Sheesh...he said if he couldn't find one or format the one we found, he was just going to send his daughter with a jump drive and see what they do.

What do they have against Rose Art? They fact that they are affordable?

I was a teacher for a while. Ziploc bags are for the kids to keep flashcards in a stuff and sometimes specific art supplies. The bigger bags are for the readers they will bring home.

My kid has a huge list too. When I taught, we sent home an equally big list (although not brand specific) and at least half the kids didn't bring anything. And this was in a prosperous school district. I bought all the supplies for the kids who didn't bring any. To the tune of about 200 dollars each school year. I don't know what the government is paying for, but I never saw much.

That is a lot of crayons. I wonder if the teacher is going to sell them on the black market or something. I can just envision her out in some back alley with her trench coat full of crayons and glue sticks trying to add to her meager income. Or is it that she thinks the children will eat a lot of crayons during their time with her? What does she need film for? Does she have to take the class pictures now too? My kids did have some ridiculous lists at times but never in kindergarten. What are the Zip-lock bags for? Her lunch?? 25 kids X all those bags is a lot of bags!???!!

I think we used to help provide tissues as a kid, but not much else. Me, I get a kick out of how specific the teacher is. Really? No Roseart? A black binder? What if you can only find blue? Too funny. That said, how sad that they only way for teachers to stock their classrooms each parent has to purchase $30 worth of supplies.

You know what I find strange? That my kids' grandma who lives in Kentucky was POSITIVE that they'd have to take a butt-load of supplies with them to our poor-outlying-suburb elementary school, and she was dead wrong. There was no supplies list whatsoever. Not even tissues for the classroom.

I'm thinking that schools in non-prosperous areas (or less prosperous areas) get the bulk of federal and/or state funding, and schools in more prosperous areas get less. At least, that's what my biased survey of your school system and mine is telling me. ;)

When I was in school we didn't have to bring anything either. I especially love how they specify brands. I'm surprised the shoes don't have to be Nike or something.
