Travel type
We’re probably not in the minority. Our last family vacation was 1.5 years ago; our last sans-kids vacation was 3 years ago.
Not that we’re going on a vacation any time soon, but a girl can dream, right?
What kind of traveler are you? Please share your idea of a great vacation, and destination!
* Do you prefer to just call up a travel agency and join a tour/cruise, a one-stop shop if you will?
* Are you the kind that spends weeks and weeks scouting out deals and book things individually, the flight, the car, the hotel, to well-known places? Like Vegas or New York or…?
* How about road trips where you just take off with nary a plan and see where it takes you and your family?
* Or do you prefer to research the less-traveled places, or during off-season and do some hiking, backpacking, and generally explore nature?
Five bonus points to those who guess correctly which category we belong.
What are the points good for? I haven’t decided yet. ![]()

Ohhh, I haven’t been on vacation for years! Sadness! I like to plan it on my own. For location - anywhere! Just get me out of town! But I admit I research and research until the cows come home!
I just like to know all the possibilities: where to eat, where to stay, what to do. It’s also important to me to act like a local and soak it all in!
Oooo and game time! I want the points!
Mmm, but I can’t tell! I think y’all like the less-traveled sort of places. My only clue might be your honeymoon. I am so off, aren’t I?!

You know where I would suggest you to go: New Zealand!
And I am the type who do research on deals, hotel, airfare separately to… mostly well known destinations, since there are so many places out there we want to go to, we’ll tackle the well published ones first.
I guess your family is the type who would go to the less travelled places and do more nature stuff. And this is purely based on intuition and your honeymoon.

Oh GAWD, we plan obsessively and yet the only place we ever go is to see my husband’s family.
We’ve been known to take a drive around our scenic state on occasion, though we haven’t done it in a while.
I peg you has the hiking/nature type.
I feel the need to mention here that when I was a kid, we always had to get up at like 4 am to leave for our road trips. Thanks, Dad, this is a great VACATION!

Um, that was supposed to be, “I peg you AS the hiking/nature type.” I haven’t started speaking LOL cats all of a sudden.

This is a tough one. For us, most of our vacationing is to places we’ve been to before so we tend to just research new places to stay, to eat, to see & do. In our case, vacations are also a time to unplug (especially for the hubby) and just relax, sleep in, listen to live music, have some drinks, and try new restaurants. We’re also really big with driving and just seeing what’s out there.
That said, we both do a little research, but nothing crazy. It’s mostly food and must-see related stuff. If we can’t stay at a hotel with points (in our case the Sheraton family) we will research hotels. But the biggest thing for us (even though I said the hubby likes to unplug) is that the hotel needs to have internet access. I’d love to go a bit more off the beaten path, but it’s just not the hubby’s thing.
We’ve used a travel agent once - for our honeymoon and it wasn’t worth it. We could have done the exact same thing, probably for a little less. We went to “honeymoon specialists” but not one place even KNEW it was our honeymoon, so no perks, no nothing (though I did tell everyone!!)
I see you guys as doing the total, unplug, get away from society, relax, hike, hang in nature sort of thing. But like others have said, that’s entirely based on your honeymoon.

We actually do a bit of a combo…
I’ll research the hell out of airfares and hotels, and we’ll make a master list of what we’d like to do. I’ll sometimes organize it by stuff that is close together. But once we’re on the ground, we wing it.
I am so NOT the outdoorsy type. At least once the sun goes down. My idea of roughing it means no little chocolate on the pillow.
There are some vacations where I like to totally do the whilrwind thing (New York) and others where just want to sit back and read (the beach). Each vacation is different.
