We need to buy a cow - updated
Annual cost for milk in this household:
$3.49/gallon x 4 gallons/wk x 52wks/year = $725.92
$725.92 per year!
.
That is, if the cost of milk stays where it is. The cost per gallon has gone up $1 whole dollar since May, just 7 short months ago.
Updated:
Melissa at Taking What is Left made a very good point, in which I’ve completely neglected to calculate, is that the cost of EGGS have also gone up tremendously in the last few months.
To wit, eggs were $2.99 for 2.5 dozen large eggs (that would be 36 eggs, or two cartons of 18) when we first moved here 7 months ago. Now it’s past $5.25
Our kids are picky eaters and eggs is on the small list of things that they will eat.
The verdict is, to buy one dozen chickens along with a strong rooster, and two cows.

I know! Whenever I see a “2 for $5″ sale, I buy 4 gallons!

That sure brings back memories of when we had to supply milk for four growing kids. I remember almost feinting when I got the bill from the milkman. Hey does anybody our there still get their milk from the milkman or has he gone the way of the dinosaurs?

Yes…I know milk ultimately comes from cows…or at least I know that now. When I was a kid I would have told you milk came from the milkman…silly!

That does make sense, I wonder how much it would cost to feed the cow?
The milk prices do hurt.

My dad has a farm. Let me just note that you have to have space for the cows and chickens. You have to feed them. You also have to collect the eggs, and milk the cows. This takes quite a bit of time. There is also a lot of chicken and cow poop to contend with. You will also have to manage to keep a cow producing milk which does mean getting a cow pregnant at some point…to start the process. You would also likely end up with more milk and more eggs than your family could consume on a daily basis, so you might want to start setting up shop in the farmer’s markets. Sound like you’d have to devote some full time hours to this operation. Also your neighbors might call the cops if your rooster crows at the break of dawn, which would mean fines for you. I think its cheaper just to buy it from the store. =)

do you go to discount stores such as aldi’s or save a lot? they have cheaper stuff and milk and eggs are pretty much the same no matter where you get them…

yup, things gone up so much lately. eggs no longer 99 cents for a dz. i buy milk from sam’s club and is about $3.xx per gallon. my son finished a gallon in about 5 days. didn’t really put the numbers together. but i still remember buying milk around $1.79 per gallon not long ago. so the price has been douibled.

I hate my job. I have these little hooligans running around drinking all my milk! I am a food’s teacher at west high in iowa city. But overall, the kids are great.
