Culture shock
Yesterday I “met” someone living in China. His post here was absolutely hilarious!
I’ll wait while you go read it.

If I were still living there, I’d probably do that with training our kids too, especially if I lived in the countryside or smaller city. That’s just what people do over there and have been for the last several thousand years. Besides, diapers are very expensive! Not to mention water (plumbed) is still not readily available in many places.
On the other hand, I absolutely agree that it’s very gross (cover your eyes for TMI) even though I was raised that way myself.
This makes me think of the various cultural differences that exists between the two countries. I’m going to think on this longer and attempt to entertain you in the process (or gross you out).

Very gross. I’ve posted several pictures of toilets and public washrooms on my China trip blog, but I’m glad I didn’t see anything like this.

Okay, that’s pretty gross. I saw a lot of split pants during our China trip (Xi’an) but mostly on older kids who would just squat on the sidewalk. Which is gross, but less gross. I did not have to experience projectile poo.
And if you don’t think about the poo part, the split pants are actually kind of cute. Kind of.
Thanks for visiting me!

A lot of really crunchy parents practice EC (elimination communication) here too. Although, it involves little toilets LOL
That blog entry was hilarious, I can only imagine what a shock it must be to see that!

um…(raising hand) me, I’M one of those crunchy parents who did EC with her son (now 4). it worked for us and i was *really* happy with how it worked out. and glad that i used many many fewer plastic disposable diapers than i would have otherwise. and yes, we always used a receptacle of some kind, not the street.
FYI: (as if it matters) i’m an american born chinese and this is probably the most “chinese” thing we did in raising our baby.
actually, between cloth diapers, biodegradable disposable diapers, and EC, there are a lot more options for parents these days.
