Officially Unemployed

Well. That about said it all.

The company I’ve been working for (my first job out of college) for the last 4.5 years is slashing ~10% of its workforce. I’m one of the lucky ducks and got picked. Supposedly my immediate supervisor did not know this and was not consulted at all. He informed me privately that if he was part of the decision-making, he wouldn’t have cut me as I was doing a good job. I believe he’s telling the truth, but it doesn’t matter now anyway.

What am I going to do with my days? And how are we going to pay for all the things that we want?

I’m really sorry. I have been through a number of lay-offs (yay dot-coms!), and whether or not you expect them it’s hard to take. I took a lot of walks through the park and along the river, and I read a lot of books, and I tried not to take it personally, although that was pretty difficult, especially when I liked the job. Good luck.

aww, I’m so sorry to hear they’ve let you go. I know money worries are the most awful feelings in the whole world and I hope you’re doing ok.

thanks so much for the continued support and best wishes

Oh no!! That really, really sucks. What is the job market like where you live? Do you want to look for another F/T position? A little notice would have been nice.

When your head is done spinning, you will have to let us know what you think your plans might be. I hope you got some decent severance pay.

That sucks. Don’t worry about the things you want, just the things you need for now (Okay that came off sounding like assvice. Ignore at will.) My sub jobs have been fewer and far between, so I might as well be unemployed. They’ve been laying off full-time teachers around here as well. Oh well, I hated that job anyway.

I guess we just have to be aware of “new opportunities” that may arise.

I’m sorry. It sucks to have that happen at any time but you definitely didn’t need the extra stress now.

Severance package? Ha. They gave me (and everyone else) the bare minimum required by law, which is 2 weeks pay.

I haven’t decided if I want to look for something else, or stay at home with the active toddler. It would be a challenge to stay home with him, especially when I have this hematoma thing and I’m suppose to take it very easy. The good thing is, we can financially make it if I stayed home.
And the job market, at least in this industry, is limited at the moment–hence the slow down and eventual layoff. Plus, if all goes well with this pregnancy, I’ll be due in September.

What would you do if you were in my shoes?

  12. on Sunday, February 6th, 2005 at 11:04 pm:

    What would I do?

Well, first of all, does your boss know you’re pregnant? If so, then I would contact a lawyer, and ask for their advice. As a former lawyer of a large corporation (and the former Chief Counsel of a medium-sized one), if I found out one of the managers of the company was trying to lay-off a pregnant woman, I would’ve lost my ever-lovin’ mind.

So if your employer knew you were pregnant, I’d seriously consider telling my story to an attorney — State Bars often have 1-800 numbers or referral services where you can get some quick answers. Check out your state’s bar organization and ask for their advice.

This is NOT to say that you’re going to get rich off of these people. But, if they’ve done something wrong, sometimes a letter from an attorney can “encourage” them to give you a couple of weeks’ extra severance, etc.

Just a thought. Best of luck, whatever happens.
